A very special visit

In February 2007 we had a visit from two very special people, Jill and Roger Bennett.

Jill and Roger lived at Trehaven from 1951 to 1959.  Then the house was a vicarage and their father, Henry Bennett, was the vicar to St Mary's church in East Looe and the St Nicholas' church in West Looe.  Henry and the family moved to Looe from Kenwyn Church in Truro

In the few days they stayed with us they recounted many a tale of their time in Looe.  They also took us on a tour of their old home.

In their time at The Vicarage the building was divided into two.  A dividing wall was built just outside the door of rooms 6 and 7 and the area that is now rooms 7 and 8, plus our lounge on the ground floor was sublet to help fund the running of the vicarage.

Roger recalled that his bedroom was small,  indeed that room is now room 6's bathroom.  If you look in the corridor to the right of room 6 you can see where the door has been blocked off.  Room 6 was reserved for visitors. Jill's bedroom is now room 3. Henry and Connie's bedroom was rooms 4 and 5. they were originally one room

The lounge used to be a "Sunday Best" room and meeting room - where children like Roger and Jill weren't allowed.  They remembered many a church meeting being held there. The bar area was their playroom (a wall divided the playroom and meeting room)

The TV lounge was Henry's study and Room 1 was their dining room.

Roger mentioned how warm the hotel now was - in the 1950's there was no central heating - but luckily each room had an open fire place, many of which can still be seen today.

Roger and Jill kindly brought some of their precious photographs of their time in Looe.

1957 - their first car.  The area that is now our car park was a lawn and their car was garaged in what is now the Coach House - half way down the drive
